Venice
Venice is a unique city. It was born around one thousand five hundred years ago on the islands of the lagoon. The development of Venice was conditioned by its special environment, in a way that is completely different from any other European or Italian city. This in an era in which the whole of Europe was an unpopulated land covered with swamps and forests.
Venice had extremely close relations with the East, through what remained of the declining Byzantine empire, the last heir to the power of the Caesars. The Venetians were able to build one of the most important economic powers of the Renaissance age and filled their city with thousands of works of art, so that today we can safely say that Venice is the world capital of art.
Here is a brief list of the monuments that no visitor, even those just passing through, can afford to miss. Among the monumental churches, St. Mark’s Basilica in the square of the same name, is without doubt the best known and also the richest in spiritual history.
The most important historical and cultural cities, such as Padua, Verona, Treviso and Vicenza can be reached quickly from Venice. There are also many other centres, less important in terms of size but not of attractiveness, such as Montagnana, Este, Monselice, Arquà Petrarca, Cittadella, Asolo, Possagno, Conegliano, Chioggia, Vittorio Veneto, Feltre, Marostica, Bassano, Soave, Peschiera, Oderzo, Portogruaro, Castelfranco, Concordia Sagittaria, Adria and Lendinara. Not forgetting the splendid Riviera del Brenta with its characteristic eighteenth century villas.
In these and other places, you can rediscover the colours and atmosphere of Bellini, Giorgione, Cima, Titian, Canova, Palladio, Tiepolo and many other artists.
